Best Level Sensors for Acid Tanks
There are several types of level sensors that are well-suited for acid tanks, each with its own set of advantages and disadvantages. Some of the most common types of level sensors for acid tanks include:
Submersible level sensors are considered to be the best type of level sensor for acid Tanks. The submersible level sensor body is made of chemically inert thermoplastic materials -PVC, PP, PVDF or PTFE Teflon. The cable is Teflon jacketed for chemical resistance.
Ultrasonic level sensors: These sensors work by emitting high-frequency sound waves that travel through the acid and are reflected back to the sensor by the surface of the acid. The sensor then uses the time it takes for the sound waves to travel to and from the surface to calculate the level of the acid. Ultrasonic level sensors are well-suited for acid tanks because they are not in contact with the acid, which reduces the risk of corrosion. They are also able to provide accurate and reliable level measurements, even in the presence of steam or other gases.
Conductivity level sensors: These sensors work by measuring the conductivity of the acid to determine the level. The sensor sends an electrical current through the acid, and the resistance of the acid is measured to determine the level. Conductivity level sensors are well-suited for acid tanks because they are not affected by the acid’s specific gravity, viscosity, or temperature. However, they can be affected by the presence of other materials, such as metals, in the acid.
Electromagnetic level sensors: These sensors use electromagnetic waves to determine the level of the acid. The sensor sends out an electromagnetic wave, which is reflected back by the surface of the acid. The time it takes for the wave to travel to and from the surface is used to calculate the level of the acid. Electromagnetic level sensors are well-suited for acid tanks because they are not in contact with the acid, which reduces the risk of corrosion, and they can provide accurate and reliable level measurements even in the presence of steam or other gases.
Radars: Guided wave radar and non-contact radar, both works similar to electromagnetic level sensors, but they use electromagnetic waves at a different frequency. They are also suitable for acid tanks, with similar advantages of electromagnetic level sensors.
Optic Level Sensors: These sensors utilize infrared light beams or laser beams to measure the level of the acid. The sensor sends a beam of light through the acid, which is reflected back by the surface of the acid. The time it takes for the light to travel to and from the surface is used to calculate the level of the acid. Optic level sensors are well-suited for acid tanks because they are not in contact with the acid, which reduces the risk of corrosion, and they can provide accurate and reliable level measurements even in the presence of steam or other gases.
When choosing a level sensor for an acid tank, it is important to consider the specific properties of the acid, such as its pH level, concentration, and temperature range, as well as the requirements of the application, such as the required level of accuracy and the operating environment.
It’s worth noting that all these level sensors have some sort of limitations. For example, ultrasonic sensors may not work well with heavily agitated liquids, conductivity sensors may not be able to distinguish between acid and other liquids, and electromagnetic level sensors may be affected by the presence of metal in the tank. It is important to test the sensor with a sample of the acid and in the tank environment to make sure it will work as expected.
