What Level Sensor to Use to Measure Level in a Tank
There are various types of liquid level sensors that can be used to determine the level of fluid in a tank, each of which employs a different technology to do so. The following are some of the most prevalent types of liquid level sensors:
Submersible level sensors (Also referred to as pressure level sensors) are an excellent choice for the measurement of a tanks level. They require no programming and are designed to measure the pressure of the liquid. The pressure can be converted into inches or gallons on your display. The Levelpro 100 series submersible level sensor is available in PVC, PP, PVDF and PTFE plastic bodies making them an excellent choice for corrosive chemical level applications.
Ultrasonic sensors: These sensors employ ultrasonic sound waves to determine the distance between the fluid’s surface and the sensor. The sensor sends out a sound wave that goes to the fluid’s surface and is reflected back to the sensor. The sensor then calculates the amount of fluid in the tank by measuring the time it takes for the sound wave to travel to and from the fluid’s surface.
Radar sensors: These sensors employ radar technology to determine the distance between the fluid’s surface and the sensor. The sensor emits a radar signal, which bounces off the fluid’s surface and returns to the sensor. The sensor then calculates the level of fluid in the tank by measuring the time it takes for the radar signal to travel to and from the fluid’s surface.
Optical sensors: These sensors measure the distance to the fluid’s surface using light-based technology. The sensor emits a laser beam that is reflected off the fluid’s surface and back to the sensor. The sensor then calculates the amount of fluid in the tank by measuring the time it takes for the light beam to travel to and from the fluid’s surface.
Weight and load cells: These sensors measure the weight of the fluid in the tank using a load-bearing mechanism. The sensor is installed beneath the tank and measures the weight of the tank and its contents. To calculate the weight of the fluid in the tank, subtract the weight of the empty tank from the overall weight.
Float sensors: These sensors make use of a buoyant object called a float that is attached to a rod or cable. As the volume of fluid in the tank changes, the float travels up and down, causing the rod or cable to move. This movement can be utilized to indicate the tank’s fluid level.
Hydrostatic pressure sensors are used to determine the hydrostatic pressure of a liquid in a tank. These sensors are positioned directly in the liquid inside the tank and measure the pressure of the liquid against the tank’s bottom.
Capacitance sensors: These sensors use the capacitance measurement principle, in which the capacitance between the electrodes changes when the level of fluid in the tank changes, showing the level of fluid in the tank.
Conductivity sensors: These sensors use the conductivity measurement principle, in which the conductivity between the electrodes changes as the level of fluid in the tank changes, showing the level of fluid in the tank.
Each of these sensors has advantages and limitations, and the optimum type for a particular application will depend on parameters such as tank size, fluid type, and environmental conditions.
